Always a mare, for a reason#
Players across the demo and the full release report that every starter horse is a mare. The common explanation is that a mare lets you start breeding quickly: paying a cover fee is much cheaper than buying a second horse, and a stallion or gelding cannot give you foals of your own.
What changes between starters#
According to players, the starter has the same stats, traits, and age in every new save. Only the coat colors and patterns change. Rerolling a new save will not give you a stronger or male starter.
Lower stats in the full game#
A community member reported before launch that the full game has slower progression and lower starter horse stats than the demo, where breeding to the stat cap was quite fast. Check your starter’s stats in your own save.
If you want a different first horse#
You can sell the starter mare and buy a gelding or stallion from the breeder in town. Another option suggested by players: keep the mare and breed for the horse you want, treating her as its mother.
Starter stats#
According to the community wiki, you choose one of 10 starter horses on the ferry when you arrive. All are mares, 60 rounds (in-game days) old, with 30 strength, 25 endurance, and full confidence; they differ only in coat colour and pattern. One of them is a homage to the starter mare of Mein Pferdehof. You also start with an old GP saddle, an old sidepull, two GP pads, and a basic riding outfit; the old saddle, old sidepull, and grey helmet cannot be bought again if you sell them.
