Horse too tired, ill, or explosive to train

What to do when every training option is locked because your horse is exhausted, ill, or explosive.

THE QUICK ANSWER

If you cannot select any training, open the medical report above the horse to see whether something more than exhaustion is wrong, and call the vet if it is ill. For an explosive horse, players report that the Free Lunge (the bottom lunging option) with a few gallops fixes it. Horses also lose fitness without regular work, so keep training between competitions.

Check the medical report first#

A horse can be locked out of training for several reasons. Look at the medical report above the horse: if it shows an illness or injury, treat it or call the vet before trying to train. Players note that you should still be able to choose a training when there is only a risk of exhaustion.

Explosive horse: use the free lunge#

If the game says your horse is explosive and suggests the Free Lunge, players report that going to the lunging training, choosing the bottom option, and letting the horse gallop a few times resolves it.

Exhaustion and rest#

Pushing a tired horse leads to exhaustion, and players report that illness and injuries happen when horses are overworked or not cared for well. Spread training across days and keep up with grooming and feeding.

Why horses lose strength and endurance#

Stats drop if a horse is not trained regularly, even if it competes, much like real fitness. Riding lessons with inexperienced riders also cost some strength and endurance. Mares lose training during late pregnancy and nursing.

Staff can overwork horses#

If training staff keep causing tendon injuries, level up your staff, or assign horses only to the staff member who trains them well.

What still needs verification

Research note

The exact thresholds for exhaustion and explosiveness need in-game verification.
